Shout Out Out Out Out

Who? Formed in Edmonton, Canada in 2004, Shout Out Out Out Out are fronted by Nik Kozub, who, along with Jason Troock, Will Zimmerman, and Lyle Bell, swaps among bass, sequencing, and synth duties. The lineup is rounded out with the dynamic drumming duo of Clint Frazier and Rob “Gravy” Hoffart. Since their debut album, Not Saying/Just Saying, was released in the summer of 2006, the band has earned a Juno nomination for Alternative Album of the Year, and now they’re set to begin touring with 120 Days. Not Saying/Just Saying was released on Kozub’s and Troock’s label, Normals Welcome Records.

What’s the Deal? Armed with synths and sequencers, SO4 makes electro-house music that’s both highly catchy and positively danceable. With two drummers and multiple bass players (as many as four at a time), the band creates textured rhythms often revolving around a single, unchanging riff. Electronic flourishes abound on standout tracks “Do You Feel Electrical” and “Forever Indebted.” And, in a move that would stop Daft Punk fans in their tracks, the entirety of Kozub’s vocals are processed through a vocoder.

Fun Fact: With so much techno-gadgetry involved in their sets, SO4 refer to their soundman as their seventh member. ELI SCHWIMMER
