Shiny Toy Guns Ring in New Year
It Happened Last Night
For Bay Are toe-tappers, the hands-down hot-spot for spending the last night of 2006 was San Francisco indie mecca the Mezzanine, where Live 105, Popscene, and Spin joined forces for a New Year's blowout. Dance moves were flowing as freely as the drinks, and during the crucial hours of 11 P.M. to 1 A.M., revelers left the bar to flood the front of the stage, getting down to two of the biggest up-and-coming bands making noise on the West Coast. San Francisco natives Scissors for Lefty launched into a wild, beat-heavy set -- highlighted by Bryan Garza's surly lyrics he sometimes delivered while sprawled across the stage floor -- while Shiny Toy Guns delivered a positively tight-knit performance. Fueled on synths and rock riffs, the stylish L.A. electro-club heroes motivated the dance floor, especially on standouts "Le Disko" and "Don't Cry Out."
