Shh! The Killers’ Secret Cali Show

Popscene, San Francisco’s weekly indie happening, sold out its 10th anniversary show simply on the promise of a “ridiculously special” headlining act. The mystery artists? Vegas superstars, the Killers. Despite the fact the headliners’ identity was revealed the day before the show, the band still managed to trigger a tangible “who are these dudes?” moment upon taking the stage. Perhaps it was the big-guys-in-a-little-venue effect, but more likely it was their new 7th Heaven-meets-Deadwood look. Though Flowers channels Bruce Springsteen on the forthcoming album, Sam’s Town, the frontman did tip his hat to his former glam rock roots — closing out with a cover of David Bowie’s “When You Rock’N’Roll With Me.” Mostly, Flowers entreated the audience to get to know the real him, crooning “Don’t you wanna come with me?” with naked vulnerability on “Bones.” The crowd was along for the ride — how could they not be when bolero-sporting bassist Mark Stoermer was driving the wagon?
