Watch Savages’ Urgent, Live-Like ‘Shut Up’ Video

Savages, "Shut Up," video

Savages ripped through one of Coachella’s best sets last weekend, playing a tent “packed with curious onlookers who quickly became true believers.” But fans who see the London post-punks live have been asked not to take videos or photos with their phones during shows. To get a flavor for Savages in concert, then, watch their newly shared clip for “Shut Up,” from upcoming debut Silence Yourself (out in North America on May 7 via Matador Records). Directed and edited by Giorgio Testi (Blur, the Killers), the video sets strobe-lit footage of the band’s combustible live performances to the album opener’s sharp-edged slow build. Jehnny Beth begins the track uttering a spoken-word mission statement, but she with a bellow that reaches “to the sun,” if we’re hearing the words right.

Savages have also added a one-off London headlining date. As Matador notes, the band will play at the Ministry of Sound on May 9. Tickets go on sale tomorrow. The show will take place “in the round,” with a surround-sound system, films, DJ sets, and support from Savages producer Johnny Hostile. Pre-order the album here.
