Sam Smith Sings His Way to U.S. Sales Record

Sam Smith Sets US Sales Record

Selling 166,000 albums in just one week, Sam Smith’s debut LP In the Lonely Hour nabbed him the biggest U.S. sales week for a male U.K. singer since SoundScan starting keeping track of such things 23 years ago. While Lana Del Rey’s Ultraviolence secured her the No. 1 spot this week — yet more reason for the Los Angeles songstress to not yet shed this mortal coil — the British crooner’s “Stay With Me” single has sold over 1 million copies on this side of the sea. And back across the pond, he has the fastest selling debut album of 2014. Maybe it’s lonely at the top (so says Sia, at least), but Smith’s hour is upon us, and Mary J. Blige has got his back.
