Reunited Quicksand Perform ‘Omission’ and ‘Fazer’ on ‘Fallon’

After over a decade apart, the members of post-hardcore group Quicksand reunited in June for a surprise appearance at record label Revelation’s 25th anniversary shows. Apparently it went well enough that they’re doing a few more gigs, including an appearance last night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon (their first time on TV in 17 years!), a couple of upcoming New York gigs and a slot on Fuck Yeah Fest in Los Angeles (all dates below).

As the Fallon videos below show, the time off hasn’t affected the band’s chemistry much. The group performed fan favorites “Omission” and “Fazer” — both off their 1993 debut Slip — and they didn’t miss one of their trademark syncopated, scratchy guitar rhythms or piercing moments of noise. Only vocalist-guitarist Walter Schreifels sounds different; compared with the original recordings, his voice sounds thinner and less growly — a far cry from the hungry NYHC rager who formed Quicksand after stints in Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today.

The band was always about progression, doing something different from their roots, which is something the members have done individually since breaking up. Schreifels has spent that time playing with the post-hardcore group Rival Schools, writing songs for the pop-punk-leaning CIV and reuniting with Gorilla Biscuits; bassist Sergio Vega has since joined the Deftones as a replacement for their bassist Chi Cheng, who is still in a coma after a 2008 auto collision. As it stands, their Fuck Yeah Fest appearance will be their last, but you never know — they’ve made that claim that before, too.

Quicksand Tour Dates:

August 24 – New York City @ Bowery Ballroom

August 25 – Brooklyn, NY @ Music Hall of Williamsburg

September 1 – Los Angeles @ L.A. State Historical Park (Fuck Yeah Fest)
