Queens of the Stone Age Add Scissor Sisters’ Frontman to Star-Studded Album

Queens of the Stone Age and Scissor Sisters

Queens of the Stone Age’s “codeine cabaret” must be the place to be. As Antiquiet reports, the latest guest confirmed for the heavy rockers’ upcoming album — which, to be clear, QOTSA recently described as “running like a dream inside a codeine cabaret” — is Scissor Sisters’ frontman Jake Shears. The glammy nu-disco singer joins Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, and former QOTSA member Nick Oliveri as guests lined up for the new LP, set for a first half of 2013 release.

Shears teased the news on Monday, when he tweeted, “I just got to do something insanely cool with some fierce Queens.” He tweeted the above photo of himself and QOTSA yesterday, writing, “Jake Shears + Queens of the Stone Age = satanic cabaret.” Any more cabaret references and we’re just gonna assume the next guest announcement will be crowdsourcing queen Amanda Palmer! Shears also tweeted a pic of him and Homme watching “some educational films.”

Despite genre differences, Shears’ involvement with QOTSA shouldn’t be a surprise. Homme starred in an infomercial earlier this year for Scissor Sisters’ Magic Hour; watch it below. Though Shears told us recently about his love of magic mushrooms and Kylie Minogue, he’s also been an outspoken fan of QOTSA. Last year, the U.K. Daily Star quoted him as saying “it’d be a dream collaboration” to work with Queens frontman Josh Homme.

“Actually, I really, really want to sing on the next QOTSA album,” Shears reportedly said. “And he’s a fan of our band too, as unlikely as that might be. I think that he’s a genius, a genuine rock hero living among us.”

Would “cabaret of geniuses” sound too much like something you’d find in the Apple Store?

Separately, NME points out QOTSA and the Killers will headline Spains’ FIB Benicàssim 2013 music festival, held from July 18-21. Other artists on the bill include Azealia Banks, something of a mermaid queen herself.
