Pusha T Gets Down With an Impressive Joaquin Phoenix Beat on ‘King Push’

Pusha T 'King Push' Joaquin Phoenix Beat

It’s been almost two months since the music gods revealed that none other than onetime fake-ass rapper Joaquin Phoenix was providing a beat for Pusha T. And now, after that long wait, we are finally able to reap the bounty that is the I’m Still Here star’s first stab at hip-hop production, thanks to an assist by Kanye West. As far as actors crossing over to rap (with apologies to Drake), it’s a pretty good beginning, featuring rat-tat-tat snares and haunting vocal samples. The video, meanwhile, is about as bare-bones as they come — Pusha raps the track barely illuminated by colored the lights, then it switches to back-lit black and white. To his credit, he also manages to name check Rage’s Zack de la Rocha and Jay Z in one line that somehow includes mention of a cranberry roaster. Pusha’s My Name Is My Name is due out October 8 via G.O.O.D. Music.
