It Happened Last Night

HOLLYWOOD: Members of Social Distortion, Alkaline Trio, Against Me! and more unite at Wheels for Humanity benefit.

Last night at Hollywood's Key Club, SideOneDummy's Joe Sib hosted a special charity event to benefit Wheels for Humanity, a group that refurbishes donated wheelchairs and custom-fits them to children and adults with disabilities in developing nations (more info). The evening's highlight was an all-star version of punk rock karaoke that included Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio, Jim Lindberg of Pennywise, Chris Cheney of the Living End, and Mike Ness of Social Distortion. Skiba took on Black Flag's "Gimme Gimme Gimme," while Nathan Maxwell of Flogging Molly did his best Circle Jerks shout out on "Wild in the Streets." Ness closed the karaoke set with the Ramones' "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker."

As for more conventional performances, Against Me! took a break from recording their new album just to play this show, and was met with an ecstatic crowd hungry for new material. The Bronx and Riverboat Gamblers also performed. In addition to monies raised with ticket sales, the event enabled concertgoers to donate money and enter raffles with prize packs put together by Volcom and Epitaph. TIM BRAMLETTE
