Super Bowl season tends to rile up sports fans — even pint-size pop stars in tight pants. Minneapolis native Prince has caught football fever, and recorded a fight song for his hometown Minnesota Vikings! Listen to a clip below.

Prince, who graced SPIN‘s cover in July to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his 1984 rock classic Purple Rain, said he “saw the future” after watching Brett Favre and co. defeat the Dallas Cowboys last weekend in person at the Metrodome, according to MyFoxTwinCities.com.

Inspired, he went straight from the stadium to the studio, penning “Purple and Gold,” an anthem that arrives just in time for his team’s appearance in the NFC Championship game this Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. (If the Vikings win, they’ll rep the Twin Cities at Super Bowl XLIV in Miami.)

Prince’s creation sounds like a strip-club remix of an old school college alma mater, in the vein of Notre Dame’s famous “Victory March,” or the University of Michigan’s “The Victors.”

The lyrics, penned in Prince’s signature single-letters-replacing-words format, are relatively straightforward, with a tiny touch of the Purple One’s indulgent style. “We r all amped up like a rock n roll band / ready 2 celebrate every score / ready 2 fight the elegant war / ready 2 hear the crowd roar.”

The Vikings said that they are fans of the song, and will post the track on their website. Check out the sample of the song below (and keep watching to see footage of Prince watching last week’s game). Tell us what you think of the song in the comments section.
