Getting “turnt up” is a rap and pop music trope in 2014, although the phrase has been around for far longer than that. Miley’s done it, 2 Chainz lives it, and now Minneapolis rock and R&B legend Prince has gotten in on the mix with his new single “FUNKNROLL.”
While Prince’s earlier Art Official Age single “U KNOW” signaled an electronical sonic twist for the Purple One, “FUNKNROLL” is the singer’s poppiest, most DJ Mustard-y single by leaps and bounds. It’s barely got Prince’s signature guitar licks hidden underneath icy synthesizers, autotuned and pitched vocals, and the pluckiest bounce beat north of New Orleans.
“Let’s get it turned up, get it, get it,” a chorus of voices chants throughout the entire song as Prince sings about dancing all night and shaking off the haters Taylor Swift-style.
