PREMIERE: The One AM Radio’s Sexy Dance Party

Ever wonder what happened to the sultry babes from Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible” video? Los Angeles trio The One AM Radio – who’ve earned big-ups from Ted Leo and L.A. beat-meister Daedelus, among others – have offered something of a sequel. Check out our premiere of the electro-pop track “Sunlight,” from their April album Heaven Is Attached by a Slender Thread.

Director Andrew Huang – who’s helmed clips by Ra Ra Riot, Avi Buffalo, and Dave Sitek’s Maximum Balloon – offers up a captivating, hyper-stylized dreamscape of a three femme fatales, who sport skin-tight dresses and glossy red lipstick that’s eerily reminiscent of Palmer’s notorious backing dancers. One passes out from the effects of a solar eclipse, only to be revived by her pals with some seductive choreography. Sweet!

Of course, the true concept goes far deeper than that. “We were talking about the idea of being stuck in a nightmare, which is sort of what’s happening in the song; it’s a waking dream,” says frontman Hrishikesh Hirway. “I brought up the play Fefu and Her Friends [by Maria Irene Fornes] and Garcia Lorca’s House of Bernarda Alba, and the girls who started the Salem Witch Trials. Andy and I had both expressed how much, in the past, we love dance videos. So this was our attempt at the synthesis of all those ideas.”

The One AM Radio – Hirway, Fontaine Cole, and Scott Leahy – are hitting the road this summer, including August dates with Dntel, the side-project for Postal Service’s Jimmy Tamborello. Dates below.
