Mavis Staples Enlists Tweedy to Finish Pops Staples’ ‘Friendship’

Pops Staples, Tweedy, Friendship

Before gospel great Pops Staples died 15 years ago, he gave his daughter Mavis Staples several unfinished songs, which she dutifully worked to complete. The resulting collection, Don’t Lose This, is due out this year, and a new song off of the record shows the care that went into making these songs whole. “Friendship” is a gentle, touching ode to togetherness and unending love — “the kind that last a lifetime,” Pops sings. Staples and her sisters Yvonne and Cleotha sing the harmonies, and they enlisted friends Jeff and Spencer Tweedy of Tweedy to play bass and drums, respectively.

Stream “Friendship” below to experience a nice warm feeling. Don’t Lose This is slated for a February 17 release.
