Don’t Worry, Phoenix Didn’t Get Hacked

Phoenix New Album Bankrupt! 2013 Hacked

SPIN has confirmed that the forthcoming fifth album from Phoenix will be titled Bankrupt! This via the huge letters that have taken over the French synthpop band’s homepage — PHOENIX BANKURPT! — and also by way of a representative from Glassnote Records who told us, “Bankrupt! is the album title.” Due to the nature of the very possibly seizure-inducing nature of the announcement (the text rapidly shifts between black and white while the background flashes through every color in the neon playbook) some initially assumed that the band had been hacked.

In December, we learned that Phoenix had wrapped recording at a Parisian studio thanks to a casual announcement from label CEO Daniel Glass. And in 2011, singer Thomas Mars told Pedestrian.tv that the band’s follow-up to the beloved Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix will be “very experimental … very minimal.” He also added, “We’d like to go somewhere else, we want to change that DNA,” and used the terms both “nostalgic” and “futuristic.” If the music that’s playing behind the blinding lettering is any indication, they may be channeling a retro-inspired impression of space age sound.

We’ve also just learned that Phoenix are planning their first live show in two years.
