Watch Pegasus Warning Mix Bodies and Sculpture in Slightly NSFW ‘TrySoHard’ Video

Pegasus Warning's "TrySoHard" video

New York-bred singer and multi-instrumentalist Guillermo E. Brown is set to release his debut EP as Pegasus Warning, Woof Ticket, on February 5 via Plug Resarch. “TrySoHard,” a collaboration with bandmate Robert Lux, shows how this SPIN Best New Artists alum can step into territory that’s been heavily trodden recently — R&B fractured with rock and avant-garde influences — and make it as intimately personal as a fingerprint. Directed by Brooklyn-based filmmaker Vinay Chowdry, the dark-paletted video for this intense, prog-inflected slow burner is a reflection of the music, at once physical and preternatural. Starring dancer Ayo Jackson and influenced by sculptor Rodin, the video mostly focuses on two nearly naked bodies, artfully entwined, but lips also move from within a black body covering, as if illustrating the obstacles against which Brown’s narrator rages. The closest recent comparison, musically and visually, might be Dawn Richard’s similarly dance-fuelled, R&B-stretching “86” video. Not bad company at all, considering we labeled Richards’ album GoldenHeart as Essential.
