Pearl Jam Dig Deep Into Catalog in Philly
Eddie Vedder is a liar.
At the start of Pearl Jam's four-night stand at the Philadelphia Spectrum -- the last concerts ever at the historic arena, which is destined for demolition -- the singer pledged to the audience, "By Saturday night we're gonna try to play every song we know."
So where was "Dirty Frank," the Ten B-side about the band's cannibalistic bus driver? Or "Soon Forget," the anti-capitalist ukelele screed from Binaural? Or "Driftin'," an acoustic number they released as a 1999 holiday single to fan club members? They've played it in concert a whopping four times; surely they must still know it, right?
But what the four epic Philly shows couldn't deliver for absolute completists, they more than made up for in obscurity and all-around weirdness. The Internet was brimming with speculation of a Philly-style Last Waltz for the Spectrum, with everyone from Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel (both of whom played the arena more than a dozen times) to Dave Matthews and Jon Bon Jovi rumored to show up.
None of them did, but Saturday's three-and-a-half-hour Halloween set did include oddities -- from a roadie dressed in full-body rat costume for "Rats," to a boxing-ring girl giving periodic World Series updates (while the Phillies were winning, anyway), to "Sweet Lew," a never-before-played-live homage to Kareem Abdul Jabbar, with Vedder dribbling a basketball into a mic.
And that's not even counting when the band came out in full Devo attire for a complete, enthusiastic rendition of "Whip It." Red bucket hats included.
This was a show for the devotees. Witness "Out of My Mind," an improv played just twice in 1994, reprised here for a fan who promised a significant sum for charity if they would perform it. Or the obscure Vitalogy throwaway track "Bugs," never played live before, a musical curiosity that features Vedder talking about joining the world of insects while he accompanies himself on the accordion. The Last Waltz, this ain't; more like The Last Polka.
It might not have been what the assembled faithful were expecting, but they ate it all up anyway.
Whether blasting through their greatest hits ("Jeremy," "Alive," "Evenflow") or 20-year-old rarities ("Crown of Thorns," by Pearl Jam precursor Mother Love Bone), this band knows as well as anyone how to rile up its audience. Vedder lets them sing on "Better Man" and "Corduroy," while "Spin the Black Circle" and "Do the Evolution" he keeps for himself. Even a brand-new song like the anthemic "Amongst the Waves" -- on Pearl Jam's latest album, out just a few weeks -- had the crowd fist-pumping the air like the band was winning them the World Series. (Someone in South Philadelphia had to; it surely wasn't happening across the street at Citizens Bank Park, where the Phillies were losing Game 3 to the Yankees.)
By the end of the night, with the house lights up and the band tearing through Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World," Vedder was tossing out to the fans a seemingly endless supply of tambourines, like he was hosting the world's loudest bar mitzvah.
As the Spectrum's final chords rang out (for the record, they came in the form of "Yellow Ledbetter"), and confetti and balloons blanketed the arena for the last time (hey, at least no one had to clean it all up, right?), it was clear that, through the saving grace of rock'n'roll, all lies were forgiven.

The concert was great! We had so much fun! From looks of the fans and the band itself no one but this Jeffrey Barg (reporter on article) is complaining!
Eddie Veddie- not a liar you knuckhead, just giving his fans what they wanted. 40 great songs! We will miss the Spectrum. Jeffrey get a good night sleep, wake up on the other side of the bed!
Who the f*ck cares about this stupid 90's band! Their music is boring recycled pop-rock. People say Eddie Vedder is "among the greatest artists of the twentieth century." This is quite possibly the stupidest comment ever printed. Pearl Jam sucks! I will never understand why people glorify this band as being so great. Pearl Jam has barely had two hits off their last three albums. Just consider the disappointing new single. Three albums of boring music, hardly good enough to be played on the radio! Wow, Vedder must be a musical genius! Pearl Jam are rock gods! I don't freakin' think so! If having one good album (Ten), and two mediocre albums (Vs and Vitalogy) entitles Pearl Jam to have "legendary" status, I guess we can compare U2 with Beethoven!
You are out of your mind. Pearl jam is one of the greatest rock bands ever to hit the stage! If you have no clue what great music is go away. Eddie Vedder has the voice of a god and has for 20 years. I guess any crappy band can sell out a four night stand at the Spectrum? Your a fool man. Go play some Creed and watch Dancing with the stars.
I once was lukewarm on Pearl Jam; however, my boys (both teenage musicians) begged me to accompany them to a Pearl Jam show in 2008 in Camden, NJ.
I was very, very (and surprisingly) impressed. It got me listening to their music. I saw them again on October 29, 2009 in Philly during their run to close out the Spectrum. I have seen Bad Co., The Who, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Foreigner (original), Queen & Paul Rodgers, The Kinks, Journey, The Rolling Stones, Bryan Adams, etc. in the past. After the October 29, 2009 performance, I would say the following:
1) The Band are all very, very accomplished musicians.
2) Their chemistry as a Band is excellent.
3) Their music (even stuff I did not know) is infectious and generally catchy.
4) Their fans are among the best and most energetic I have ever seen.
5) Eddie Veder's voice was better live than any other frontman I have ever seen except Paul Rodgers of Queen & PR, Free and Bad Co. Vedder was probably on a par (or almost on a par) with Rodgers. Loud, clear, great growl, hit most of the high notes and all this after twenty plus years.
6) Veder has better stage presence than nearly every other frontman I have seen. He blows Jagger away by a mile. He was even slightly better than Steven Tyler and Roger Daltrey (at least on the two occasions I saw Aerosmith and The Who ---- his voice is far better than Tyler or Roger Daltrey in a live settling). Axl Rose could learn a lot from watching Vedder. He is a very, very compelling frontman and knows how to run the audience to have them eating out of his hand. The performance I saw on October 29, 2009 was the best performance of a live band I have ever seen. Vedder, just amazing.
See them live. It may convince you, too.
Very inciteful and excellent comments coming from a guy who says he wasn't a big fan before being dragged to a show by his sons.
Its all true -that's why I've been a fan since 1991.
hey buddy u should eat shit.. hows about that if you dont like then dont post comments ..
IF YOU HATE PEARL JAM SO MUCH THAN WHY THE F*CK DID YOU TAKE THE TIME TO POST YOUR STUPID DISRESPECTFUL COMMENT. I THINK ITS GOOD THAT PEARL JAM IS NOT ON THE RADIO BECAUSE USALLY THE MUSIC THAT PLAYS ON THE RADIO IS GAY! SO MORE POWER TO THEM FOR NOT BEING GAY LIKE SOME LITTLE GAY ASS PUNK BANDS. (PROBABLY LIKE THE ONES YOU LISTEN TOO)I JUST WISH PEOPLE WOULD TAKE THE TIME AND APPRECIATE PEARL JAM ESPECIALLY MY AGE GROUP (im 13). EVERYBODY NOW A DAYS IS CAUGHT UP CRAP LIKE BRITTANY SPEARS. ANYWAYS.....
THE LAST SHOW WAS OUT OF MY MIND BETWEEN THE DEVO PERFORMANCE AND THEM PLAYING BUGS OR EVEN THE BALLOONS AND CONFETTI WOW IS ALL I CAN SAY!
JUST WISH THEY PLAYED BEE GIRL
I WAS DRESSED UP LIKE A BEE GIRL
Who cares, you ask? 4 nights worth of the Spectrum full to the rafters. I was there on Halloween. It was amazing and all of the stuff from the new album fit right in with everything else and was received just the same. There's nobody better. Sorry that you are missing out.
Long live the mighty PJ!
If you didn't like Pearl Jam, why are you even reading about ? I guess your upset cause you couldn't get tickets to this awesome show!
Well obviously another Good Charlotte fan......and somebody not wise or old enough to appreciate a true rock God and Band! DUDE...YOUR MOM IS CALLING YOU TO THE TABLE FOR DINNER...TURN OFF THE BLINK 182 AND GO EAT!!!
did the person slammign the article writer even read the article? the liar comment is obviously tongue-in-cheek, as apparent from the article's ending and the uber-positive comments throughout.
God Bless Pearl Jam!
Went Wednesday night and Saturday night. Both nights were amazing. Saturday you could tell the band wanted to give that venue its just due. 40 songs over 3 1/2 hours. As for the person above saying they went on 10/29...you must have been dreaming they didn't play that night.
Got something to say?
