Paul Weller Kicks Out the Jam

NEW YORK: The Jam/Style Council chief plays the first night of his three-gig stint at Irving Plaza.

Generations of Anglophiles gathered Monday as Paul Weller kicked off his three-night stand at Irving Plaza. Despite the fact the sold-out show was dedicated to the music of the Jam, the Modfather plowed through a set spanning his entire illustrious career. Clad in a pinstriped suit and standing before the Union Jack, the dapper musician mixed solo classics like "The Changing Man" and "Broken Stones" along with Jam hits "That's Entertainment" and "Running on the Spot." The audience quickly went from reverential to rowdy as the concert progressed; by the time Weller performed the closing number, "Town Called Malice," the icon's soulful vocals could barely be heard as a room filled with Britpop fanatics began to shout to the top.
