Parquet Courts Douse ‘Fallon’ With Feedback in Triumphant Network TV Debut

Parquet Courts, "Stoned and Starving," 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon'

Sorry, smart guys, the secret’s out about Parquet Courts. But like the laconic vintage-indie iconoclasts who underpin their Essential late-2012 debut album, Light Up Gold, these Brooklyn “Roadrunner”-roadrunners are built to withstand a little exposure. Co-led by Andy Savage and Austin Brown, the group made their network TV debut last night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, and it was all of the Not That Much Really, But Just Enough you could hope. Their host must’ve been trying to be polite when he introduced “Stoned and Starving” as another mag’s No. 6 song of last year when it’s clearly the scientifically determined No. 40 Best Song of 2013, but what’s a few dozen listicle spots between friends — and anyway, they could easily have been top five here, ruthlessly administering the rumble ‘n’ squeal of munchies-filtered Ridgewood, Queens, and facing the amps for the feedback-glorying outro. Where Savage wore glasses and had an Andrew Bujalski-like brainy-chic mien about him with former band Fergus & Geronimo, here his mossy slope of hair and ’70s-dad mustache suit the music’s unwholesome catharsis. Clearly this was a band that had played, like, 100-plus shows in the past year — “slackers,” sheeeit. The more you use it, the more it works.
