Paramore ‘Now’ Sound Like Mathy Post-Rock: Preview the New Single

Paramore New Single Now Preview Video New Sound

Paramore’s self-titled fourth album is due out April 9, and it will be the Tennessee emo-pop band’s first in nearly four years. The reason for the delay? As slimmed-down trio put it in themselves December, they were becoming a “brand new band.” We’ve finally got the first taste of the new Paramore via a video snippet of the forthcoming single, “Now,” due to hit iTunes on January 22. “It just feels like the perfect way to start this new journey we are embarking on not only as a band but as a movement,” the band wrote of the song last month. “To show people that you can lose battles but come back and win full on wars. You can rise from ashes. You can make something out of even less than nothing. The only thing you have to do is keep moving forward!”

While we get less than a minute of it it above, we indeed see and hear a different side of Paramore. The music begins with a ghostly “ooh,” and builds from soft and slow into moody, math-addled guitarplay and frenzied drumming. We’re seconds away from what feels like an At the Drive-In song as we hear Hayley Williams preparing to deliver her opening line. And then it cuts out. The clip shows clap-along sessions, a string section, producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen’s generous ‘fro, a cute doggie wearing bubble wrap, and Williams spitting some very fast lyrics into the mike. Rapping perhaps? Okay, probably not, but the loud-quiet dynamic unexpectedly conjures memories of Mogwai, so who knows what we’re going to get.
