Trent Reznor has a bright future in scoring movies: The Nine Inch Nails frontman has been nominated for an Oscar for his score to the Social Network, the Academy announced today. Reznor, along with longtime collaborator Atticus Ross, picked up his first nod in the category of Best Original Score.

Reznor faces some stiff competition for the trophy. He’s nominated alongside past winners Hans Zimmer (for Inception) and A.R. Rahman (for 127 Hours), and past nominee Alexandre Desplat (for The King’s Speech) and first-timer John Powell (for How to Train Your Dragon). Reznor picked up a Golden Globe earlier this month, which is often a good indicator about who will win on Oscar night.

The Social Network also earned top honors in other categories, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), Best Director (David Fincher), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin). In the category of Best Picture, Network will face off against Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, the Kids Are All Right, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, True Grit, and Winter’s Bone. The awards show airs on February 27 at 8 P.M. on ABC.

This isn’t the only soundtrack project that Reznor has in the works. As SPIN previously reported, Reznor is teaming up with Ross to write the soundtrack to the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the American adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling book, which will also be directed by Fincher. The movie is slated to open around Christmas – just in time for the 2012 Oscar race.

“We started recording things in a different way, that was all based on performance, nothing programmed,” Reznor said of the Tattoo score, which will be more orchestral-oriented. “And that would be my limited skills at stringed instruments. We process it in a way that gives it a really interesting, organic, layered feel. It felt like something we’ve never done before.”
