Nature and Progress Battle to the Death in ODESZA’s ‘Cover Bombs’ Video

Odesza / Photo by Mary Beth Coghill

ODESZA, a producer duo comprised of Harrison Mills (Catacombkid) and Clayton Knight (BeachesBeaches), performed a chillwave overhaul of “Cover Bombs” — a looping, sun-soaked strummer by Tennessee DIY project Nomadic Firs — for their self-released debut album, Summer’s Gone. But the Seattle-based pair opted for a more literal interpretation of “Cover Bombs” for the music video.

The three-minute-plus clip portrays the spread of suburban sprawl as a construction paper cut-out forest is ravaged — trees chopped down, animals driven from their homes — to make room for a lonesome, crowded west. Except this time, technology helps nature make a comeback; technicolor missiles and bombs cover the homes and factories (hence the name “Cover Bombs”). Kaleidoscopic explosions ensue and the wildlife reclaim their land. Computers creating a colorful facsimile of the outdoors — imagine that.
