Johnny Marr Played Some Classics With Noel Gallagher

It’s always enjoyable when you get to see two rock icons from different (but roughly analogous) moments in rock history cross generational boundaries to play together. We just saw it with Joan Jett and Billie Joe Armstrong, and now we have Johnny Marr and Noel Gallagher, guitarists for the Smiths and Oasis, respectively. The duo of U.K. guitar legends strapped up together at Marr’s show at the O2 Brixton Academy in London to take on Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life” (above) and Johnny and the lads’ own “How Soon Is Now?” (below).

While there’s nothing hugely revelatory about the performances themselves — though it’s kinda weird to see Marr singing in place of the Mozzer on “How Soon” — it’s just fun to see the two up there togehter, especially knowing what a Smiths geek Noel is. Good show, and look out for Noel Gallagher’s Flying Birds’ Chasing Yesterday — with a special appearance from Marr on closer “Ballad of the Mighty I” — out on March 2.
