This year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction is set for Thursday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and Jimmy Fallon's team over at The Tonight Show isn't letting the occasion pass uncelebrated. Throughout the week Fallon will host a number of this year's inductees, including performances on Tuesday from Yusuf Islam and Friday from KISS. But undoubtedly Fallon's biggest get comes Wednesday night, with surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic as guests alongside Jennifer Garner and Stevie Nicks.
It'll be Grohl and Novoselic's first public appearance together since winning Best Rock Song at this January's Grammys, but what this appearance will actually entail is unclear at this point, as Nicks is billed as the night's musical guest. Given, however, the Fleetwood Mac member's involvement in Dave Grohl's Sound City project — and the fact that we saw the pair perform "Landslide" together a year ago — further collaboration between the two wouldn't be a surprise.
Incidentally, Nirvana's role in the following night's proceedings at Barclays is similarly opaque at this point. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame CEO Joel Peresman assured that "with the exception of Linda Rondstadt and KISS, everyone is performing," but he revealed no details as to the nature of Nirvana's contribition. Perhaps the Fallon appearance will shed some light onto what's going down on Thursday, but don't count on it.
Either way, any occasion that puts Grohl and Novoselic in the same room is a good one, especially at this bittersweet moment, which finds them celebrating their youthful accomplishments while simultaneously mourning the 20th anniversary of the loss of their friend and frontman, Kurt Cobain. You can check out a few cover stories and remembrances we've uncovered from the SPIN archives as we too look back on that tragic time.
Musically, it's must-see-TV on Fallon all week, with a performance from Nas and Q-Tip (no Rock Hall relation) kicking things off on Monday. More details on all the week's guest are over at Fallon's website.
