Watch Nirvana’s Vicious ‘Scentless Apprentice’ Performance Off Upcoming ‘Live and Loud’ DVD
Massive 'In Utero' reissue due September 24 via Universal Music
Nirvana’s mammoth 20th anniversay reissue of their classic In Utero LP promises more than 70 (yes, 70) remastered, remixed, rare, and live recordings taken from the legendary band’s latter days. One treasure that’s being dusted off is a DVD capturing the alt-rock icons’ Live and Loud concert, filmed on December 13, 1993 at Seattle’s Pier 48 for an MTV broadcast. The disc will be packaged into the Super Deluxe Edition of the In Utero retrospective and will also be issued as a standalone release on September 24 via Universal Music. But fans can get an exclusive first look at the footage right here at SPIN.
Press the play button above to see Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, future SPIN cover star Dave Grohl, and Pat Smear shred “Scentless Apprentice,” one of the most abrasive tracks on one of the most abrasive records of the 1990s. The clip finds Nirvana in peak form — the foursome remind that they were as adept at muscle-headed chug as they were at frenzied self-laceration.
Fans who purchase the Super Deluxe Edition of In Utero or the Live and Loud DVD on September 24 will also be eligible for a free Nirvana tattoo at select tattoo shops in Southern California, Seattle, and Long Island. And commemorate the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s final album even further by downloading Deer Tick’s recent In Utero tribute concert, reading what Grohl and Novoselic have to say about the previously unreleased “Forgotten Tune,” and revisiting SPIN’s 1993 cover story on Nirvana, Smashing Their Heads on the Punk Rock.
