Nils Frahm’s ‘Says’ Gets Gorgeously Trippy Video

Nils Frahm Says Video Spaces Album Live

Late last year, we premiered “Hammers,” a fluttering Reichian dream from pianist/composer Nils Frahm. Now the Berliner returns with the video for a more electronically tinged standout from his excellent new Spaces album. “Says” starts quietly with humble key-strikes and a slowly roiling synth sequence, but by the eight-minute track’s end it’s become a hulking monolith of crystalline notes and pulsing rhythm.

Romain Assénat and Ana Silva perform a similar trick with the clip above, improvising with ink on glass (and a video feedback device), toying with repetition and compositional evolution as they go. You’ll hear cheering at the end — Spaces is so named because the 11 songs therein were captured at various live performances over the past couple of years. Speaking of, Frahm is on tour in March.
