New Young Pony Club

Who: Mutual friends introduced now London-based vocalist Tahita Bulmer and guitarist Andy Spence in 2004, who shared a love of punk rock and dance music, from Gang of Four to Tom Tom Club. The founding pair began writing together, originally only for Tahita to perform. Andy later assumed a larger role when they decided to form a proper band, so the duo recruited the single-monikered Lou (keyboards), Igor (bass), and Sarah (drums). Modular picked them up just over one year later.

What’s the Deal: Combining angular guitar-driven rock with disco-pop gloss, New Young Pony Club drives even the most sedentary to the dance floor. “Get Lucky” and “The Get Go” employ an innocent sensuality that teases while funky bass riffs fully seduce. Insistent beats blend smoothly with an energetic synthesizer to produce contagious, bouncy tracks. The group’s debut full-length album hits streets in early 2007.

Fun fact: Tahita and Andy initially pressed 1,000 copies of their debut seven-inch single “Ice Cream,” but that wouldn’t be enough. The entire lot sold out in just three days. EMILY YOUSSEF
