The Net Called It: Taylor Wins

As the online community predicted yesterday, Taylor Hicks was named the newest American Idol last night, beating Katherine McPhee for the title. After performing a trio of songs, including Elton John’s “Levon,” the Alabama-bred Hicks, 29, was announced as the people’s choice, beating 22-year-old Los Angeles native McPhee whose set included “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Affectionately called “Soul Patrol” by his fans, the gray-haired Hicks was the choice in online communities across the country and became the oldest Idol winner in the show’s five-year history.
