Neil Young and ‘Crazy Host’ Debate Saving the Earth on ‘The Colbert Report’

Neil Young, Stephen Colbert, Crazy Host, Who's gonna stand up and save the earth

The conservative blowhard Stephen Colbert plays on his show seems like he would be Neil Young’s worst nightmare. Yet the two managed to come together for a pretty hilarious duet following an interview on The Colbert Report last night.

Young, who was wearing “his formal t-shirt,” according to Colbert, talked about his new music player, Pono (it has a “button that gets the U2 album off of it”), and Colbert’s refusal to sing a song demanding for President George W. Bush’s impeachment with Young the last time he appeared on the show. While the musically-inclined Colbert joked that he’d would be up for the duet now that Barack Obama is president, they decided upon “Who’s Gonna Stand Up (And Save The Earth)” instead.

However, “Neil Young and Crazy Host” couldn’t quite agree during the environmental ballad. While Young passionately called for the end of fracking in his lyrics, Colbert had some counterpoints. “I know it feels good to save the Earth / But what if the dolphins attack us first?” Colbert sang back. “Solar power is bound to fail / I say it’s time to frack the whales.”

Fair enough. Watch below, and look out for Neil Young’s new album Storeytone in late November.
