The Colbert Report is celebrating the holidays with “Christmas Carol Week,” a week-long series that pairs host Stephen Colbert with various musical guests for collaborative caroling. On December 16, members of the National dropped by the Comedy Central talk show for the second time this year to sing a rendition of “Silver Bells” alongside Colbert and fellow guest Gregg Allman (who is not only a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, but also the future subject of a biopic starring the All-American Rejects’ Tyson Ritter).

National leader — and occasional gravy boat captain — Matt Berninger lent his musky baritone to the Christmas classic, complementing Colbert’s, uh, unique spoken-word interlude (“Darling, you are the cow of my every field”) and Allman’s warm words of comfort. The National: Not Your Dad’s Dad-Rock, but more than happy to loosen their ties, down some egg nog, and admire the tree lights with your dad’s dad-rock. Watch the performance above.

Colbert’s “Christmas Carol Week” continues on December 17, with Cyndi Lauper and actor Alan Cumming. Other guests booked include Aaron Neville and the Blind Boys of Alabama.
