How's this for quirky music news: New York City trio Nada Surf, known for their lovelorn and austere indie-folk tunes, will cover prog-rock titans the Moody Blues' six-minute, tempo-twisting 1970 epic "Question" on their first-ever covers album, if i had a hi-fi (available March 25).

The release will also features covers of tunes by Depeche Mode ("Enjoy the Silence"), the Soft Pack ("Bright Side"), and Arthur Russell ("Janine"), as well as tracks by Kate Bush, pop-rocker Dwight Twilley, Spanish band Mecromina, power-popper Bill Fox, and Aussie indie band the Go-Betweens.

Nada Surf will sell if i had a hi-fi -- the title is a palindrome! -- exclusively this Spring on a 13-date U.S. tour starting March 25 in New York City, before releasing it digitally and physically through retail outlets after the outing is completed. During their three-date New York run the band will perform each of their three most recent albums -- Let Go, The Weight Is A Gift, and Lucky -- one per night. Concertgoers can expect plenty of tunes from their covers album live, too.

Singer/guitarist Matthew Caws explained Nada Surf's approach to the covers album, which was recorded over three weeks in September at Austin, TX's Resonate Studios: "We really just wanted to do it organically, whatever we felt like covering in the moment, rather than trying to sum up our influences or something. It's whatever we were excited about in the months before making it."
