MySpace to 'Rock for Darfur' with (+44), Secret Machines

MySpace has announced plans to organize 20 concerts featuring bands promoted on their site as part of their new campaign, “Rock for Darfur,” which aims to raise awareness and funds for the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Artists including (+44), TV on the Radio, Secret Machines, Citizen Cope, Amos Lee, and Alice in Chains, among others, will perform in cities across North America Oct. 21 as part of MySpace’s largest philanthropic effort to date. All bands involved in the campaign will donate a portion of their tickets sales to the relief efforts of Oxfam, the leading international relief and development organization, in Sudan and Chad.

Aside from the concerts, Rock for Darfur also features a public service announcement by Samuel L. Jackson, which will air in theaters before selected Twentieth Century Fox films in October, and interactive components on the campaign’s MySpace profile, including ways to contribute to Oxfam’s relief efforts.

“More than three years of violence in Darfur has left half the region’s population dependent on international aid for survival, and there are untold thousands more who can’t even be reached,” said Oxfam America president Raymond C. Offenheiser in a statement. “It’s incredibly heartening that MySpace, which can rally millions of people to this cause, is working so hard to educate the world about this crisis.”
