"We're going back to a similar vibe that we had on the first three records," bassist Tommy Blankenship recently told SPIN of My Morning Jacket's sixth album, Circuital, out May 31. "It's definitely more laid back than it's been in a while."
And after months of laboring at a makeshift studio in a church outside their hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, Jim James and Co. have finally unveiled the first (and title) track from the LP. Guess what? It's a DeLorean ride at 88 mph back to the early '00s, when MMJ's five members had even longer hair and guitar riffs, and their sound was a moody, gothic mix of Southern rock and reverb-soaked indie.
The seven-minute epic opens with a brooding riff then lifts into a fist-pumping anthem sure to get fans dancing at Bonnaroo this year. The roots-y sentiment is reflected in James' lyrics, too: "Right back at the same place that we started out," he hollers in his Appalachian-high pipes, before a ripping guitar solo takes over.
To pre-order Circuital or a limited edition deluxe package with special goodies, like a 30 minute documentary DVD, head to MMJ's website, where fans can also score live tracks from the band's five-night residency at New York City's Terminal 5 last fall.
