The Best (and Worst) Moments from the 2014 MTV VMAs

The MTV VMAs came and they … conquered? Well, Beyoncé did at least, but was that enough to extend the relevance of the “video music awards” event hosted by the channel that — at least as much as popular lore is concerned — doesn’t play music videos anymore? There are a few ways one can look at the 31st annual celebration of short, sound-backing celluloid. There are the facts (who won and who lost), there’s the critical take (a dull affair designed to redress the impact of last year’s twerk heard ’round the world), and there are GIFs (there will always be GIFs). But what is this night but a series of moments strung together, eagerly awaiting binary categorization, to find out whether they’re simply “Best,” or “Worst.” Yep. That’s what this is. From Jim Carrey’s scarf-powered improv to Miley Cyrus going Brando, it’s the best and worst of the 2014 VMAs.
