INTERVIEWSMTV Goes '90s-Style with VMA Noms

by SPIN Staff

Apparently, MTV likes to party -- like it's 1997. The network announced its 2005 Video Music Award nominees today, and late-'90s stalwarts like Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliott, and Green Day led the way. Missy's "Lose Control" and Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" were both nominated for six awards, while Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "American Idiot" are both in the running for various accolades. P. Diddy will host this year's overblown affair on August 28 in Miami. Maybe if the viewers are lucky, Will Smith will perform a rousing rendition of his hit song "Miami," from 1997's Big Willie Style. MTV viewers can only hope and dream.
