Hear Monotonix Guitarist’s Elusive Rebirth as Outravez on ‘Escorpiao’

outravez, yonatan gat

Yonatan Gat first distinguished himself as the guitar-shredding madman for now-defunct trio Monotonix, but the New York-based virtuoso has resurfaced with a new project, Outravez. Teaming with drummer Igor Domingues (also of Angolan/Portuguese outfit Throes + the Shine), Gat plans to release a full-length debut and mount a tour in 2014, but first comes “Escorpião,” the opening track from Outravez’s upcoming debut. The new tune is a globe-trotting affair, merging fado guitar and darbuka drumming with field recordings collected in New York, Israel, Portugal, and Spain — listen for construction noise, a Spanish street musician, and train station ambience buried beneath the frayed and fuzzed guitar. Stream “Escorpião” below and stick through till the end to hear the tune transform into a Hanukkah chant sung in Portuguese.
