Mikal Cronin is shaping up to be almost as prolific as his garage-pop pal Ty Segall. The San Francisco songwriting ace just released his excellent new album MCII through Merge today, and he also contributed the grimy “Better Man” to Adult Swim’s 15-song Garage Swim compilation. Though Cronin’s style is crisper and more melody-oriented than those of some of his peers, he’s not averse to goofiness, as a couple of his other recent online offerings reveal.
First, if you have about 20 minutes to spare, a band-made documentary of Cronin’s European tour is below, and it’s oddball fun; the clips have been online since late last month, but the view counts suggest they’ve so far gone mostly unnoticed.
Second, Cronin has also recorded a ukulele- and harmonica-based, heartfelt-sounding cover of Sixpence None the Richer’s Dawson’s Creek-era alt-pop hit “Kiss Me.” It’s much, much better than all those times Guster let their non-singing drummer sing this one; in fact, it’s endearing and might help you hear the original in a whole new way.
