Watch Miguel’s Spiritually Searching ‘Candles in the Sun’ Video

We’ve seen Miguel “Adorn” LettermanLenoNPR’s Tiny Desk, and SPIN’s 40 Best Songs of 2012 list — oh, and the freaking Grammys — so perhaps the time is ripe for something fresh from the man’s Essential second album Kaleidoscope Dream (which, sheesh, happened to rank quite high in our 50 Best Albums of 2012 rundown). For his next trick, the Alt R&B maestro is sharing a video for the spiritually searching LP-ender “Candles in the Sun,” a nearly ambient track whose tense deployment is well met by the striking black-and-white visuals seen above. We see guns and rosaries, prayer rugs and American flags, the homeless and the handcuffed, addicts and soldiers. Meanwhile, Miguel sings, “Is there a god? / Is he watching? Is she watching? / Are they watching now?” He can at least count on a far larger portion of the corporeal world to be doing just that after scooping a gramophone at Music’s Biggest Night earlier this month.
