M.I.A. Rebuts Drake’s ‘YOLO’ Philosophy With ‘Y.A.L.A.’

m.i.a., y.a.l.a., matangi

M.I.A. has rebuffed Drake’s ubiquitous mantra of “YOLO” (full translation: “You Only Live Once”) with her own existentialist acronym: “Y.A.L.A.,” or “You Always Live Again.” The Sri Lankan singer-rapper revealed another piece of her upcoming fourth album, Matangi, this time in the form of a 90-second preview of new song “Y.A.L.A.” Maya shared the SoundCloud file on Wednesday with a tweet that reads, “If you only live once why we keep doing the same shit?” Good question!

Instead of an answer, M.I.A. offers a skronky jungle-thumper that fans can hear in full on October 22 after they pre-order Matangi. The 15-track follow-up to 2010’s MAYA features previously heard tunes “Come Walk With Me,” “Bring the Noize,” “Only 1 U,” “AtTENTion,” and last year’s “Bad Girls.”

Aside from being the latest M.I.A. song, “Y.A.L.A.” is also the latest bit of heat directed at Drake. The Nothing Was the Same MC is reportedly embroiled in a beef with (ex-?) tourmate Future and he’s also been a recent target of Kendrick “Control” Lamar, who threw shade at the Toronto superstar via a much-talked about cypher at the 2013 BET Hip-Hop Awards. Don’t sweat it though, Drizzy: You always live again.
