Mark Hoppus' Pick of the Week: The Weepies
Hopp on Pop
When he's not commandeering the stage as the boisterous bassist for SoCal punks Blink-182, Tweeting wisdom to more than 1.6 million followers, or handling album production duties for bands like Motion City Soundtrack and New Found Glory, you'd think Mark Hoppus would turn down the music.
Not. Possible.
In our continuing series, Hopp on Pop, Hoppus shares his favorite acts, culled from his incessant pursuit of all that rocks. (Click here to discover Mark's previous picks: Globetrotting MC Uffie, Britpoppers Your Vegas, edgy noisesmiths Ratatat, and more.) one of the greatest voices anywhere - Deb Talan of The Weepies. I got her own album some years back " A Bird Flies Out" and it absolutey floored me
"Unravelling" is a song by Deb that is up there with the best of Cohen, Colvin or Mitchell. " You're a river of tangled string, you are unravelling and no one else seems to mind. you keep it to yourself , dust it off and act fine.................

i'm glad that he acknowledges this time around that they have been around for quite some time, instead of claiming to have discovered the next big thing like he usually does. i <3 weepies.

We are eagerly awaiting new album and tour (they've just gotta tour!). This is music that simply never wears out its welcome. The kids love them, but the lyric themes are satisfyingly adult (Riga Girls, Citywide Rodeo) in addition to being beautifully poetic, and the melodies are instantly engaging. Recordings are deep and pristine; surprisingly full, given the sparsity of instrumentation. However many stars are the maximum, I'd give to The Weepies. This is from a rock music fan, not necessarily a "folkie" fan.
