Maggie Bjorklund, Jack White’s Guitarist, Announces New Solo Album ‘Shaken’

Maggie Björklund

Maggie Björklund plays pedal steel guitar for Jack White’s all-female backing band, the Peacocks, but now the Danish singer-songwriter is getting ready to release her second solo record. Titled Shaken, the follow-up to 2011’s Coming Home will arrive in the U.S. on October 14 via Bloodshot Records. (The European release date is September 29.)

For the album, Björklund has enlisted both classical and contemporary musicians: Barb Hunter on cello, Jim Barr (of Portishead) on upright bass, John Parish (producer for Sparklehorse) on guitar, and Kurt Wagner (of Lambchop) as a guest vocalist.

Björklund’s upcoming LP draws heavily on her experiences tending to her ill mother, who recently passed away. On the melancholy instrumental track “Missing at Sea,” Björklund strums and fingerpicks to create a mournful wail as ominous, staccato cello lines rumble in the background. Listen to the studio version of the song below, and pre-order Shaken at Bloodshot Records.
