Watch Madlib Compare J Dilla to Coltrane in Rare Video Interview

Madlib Video Interview Radio France Vinyl Collection

Revered rap producer Madlib is a notoriously difficult guy to pin down for an interview. The staggeringly prolific artist usually prefers to keep his head down, so much so that we were a wee bit surprised to see him in the 2013 documentary about his record label, Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton: This Is Stones Throw Records. But if there’s a surefire way to lure the man born Otis Jackson Jr. out of his cave, it’s to offer him access to your a massive record collection, assuming you’ve got something to rival his own.

Seen above, Madlib tells Radio France DJ/host Laura Leishman that he owns four tons of vinyl, in fact. He also discusses his early days touring with Tha Alkaholiks, finds a Sun Ra record that he doesn’t own, and plays some of the source material from his beloved Quasimoto project. This year, we’ve seen Madlib freak with Dr. Stokely, produce for Freddie Gibbs, and particapte in a tribute to the late, great J Dilla, who he likens to John Coltrane in the clip.
