Hear M83’s ‘Ali & Matthias,’ From a New Movie About a French Orgy

M83 Ali Matthias You and the Night Soundtrack Stream

M83’s next album will be a soundtrack to an avant-garde French film about an orgy. You and the Night is directed by Yann Gonzalez, who happens to be the brother of Anthony Gonzalez, a.k.a. M83. But as per the electro-crawling Los Angeles-based project’s usual M.O., the soundtrack will also feature the vocal prowess of Morgan Kibby and Susanne Sundfør, and the orchestral arrangements of Joe Trapanese. “Ali & Matthias” can be heard below.

Still, as Anthony Gonzalez put it in a written statement, “People who only like ‘Midnight City’ are going to be disappointed. Mellow and romantic, this soundtrack pays tribute to French soundtracks from the ’70s and is much more intimate than Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming and the Oblivion Soundtrack. This score is really for lovers and ghosts.” But not ghost-lovers — what kind of exclusive orgy is this?

To find out, view the the trailer on YouTube. Yann Gonzalez cites groundbreaking European filmmakers Luis Buneal and Alejandro Jodorowsky as influences. Regarding his contribution to You and the Night, Anthony says, “The movie is very emotional and it’s the movie of my brother, so it was a very important project for me. Yet as we share the same values, have the same artistic influences, it was also a very natural and uncomplicated process.”

You and the Night opens at French theaters on November 13, and the soundtrack will hit digital retailers on November 19. A physical release will come in 2014, or sooner if the movie has a happy ending. Listen to the expansive, drifty, and a little Morricone-y first taste of the score here:
