Lorde Bares Her Fangs on ‘Hunger Games’ Single ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’

Lorde Yellow Flicker Beat The Hunger Games Mockingjay Soundtrack Single

In terms of pop stars who could actually hold their own in a real life version of the Hunger Games, we wouldn’t put it past Lorde winning the whole damn thing. Earlier this morning, the “Royals” singer bared her metaphorical fangs on the new Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack cut “Yellow Flicker Beat,” a Pure Heroine-esque song with typically sweeping themes and moody, electronically enhanced melodies.

The Paul Epworth-produced “Flicker” sounds a lot like “Biting Down” from her 2012 EP, Love Club. Here, the New Zealand singer takes a big step towards more mature lyrics, including, “The scars that mark my body / They’re silver and gold” and “My blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones.”

Lorde was also tasked with curating the entire Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack, which she described thusly:

Curating the soundtrack for such a hotly-anticipated film was a challenge, but I jumped at the chance. The cast and story are an inspiration for all musicians participating and, as someone with cinematic leanings, being privy to a different creative process has been a unique experience. I think the soundtrack is definitely going to surprise people.
