Listen to Dan Mangan + Blacksmith’s Emotive Folk-Rock Ballad ‘Mouthpiece’

Dan Mangan + Blacksmith

Dan Mangan is kind of a big deal in his native Canada. The British Columbian singer, who performs with a full band called Dan Mangan + Blacksmith, has two JUNO awards — one for New Artist of the Year and Alternative Album of the Year for 2012’s Oh Fortune — and was short-listed for a Polaris Music Prize in 2010 for “Nice, Nice, Very Nice” and long-listed in 2012 for “Oh Fortune.” He also writes for the Guardian and the Huffington Post, and he’s on renowned Great White North label Arts & Crafts, home to acts like Broken Social Scene, Feist, and more. Now Mangan + Blacksmith has released a new folk-rock tune titled “Mouthpiece,” a memorable cut that should hopefully make the positive word of mouth migrate down to the U.S.

A passionately delivered song that recalls everyone from soulful Irish crooner Damien Rice to introspective indie-rock stalwarts the National, “Mouthpiece” leads in with a fast-paced, springy drumbeat and hard-hitting acoustic, followed by Mangan’s bittersweet baritone. Listen to the enthralling song below, and pick up Dan Mangan + Blacksmith’s fourth full-length, Club Meds, when it drops on January 13.
