Emmett Till’s Family Agrees Lil Wayne Didn’t Actually Apologize for Anything

Lil Wayne Emmett Till Family Response Apology

The family of civil rights icon Emmett Till has responded to Lil Wayne’s non-apology for sullying the 14-year-old lynching victim’s name in song. As SPIN previously noted, Weezy’s statement regarding the offending lyric fell short of actually apologizing for the since-pulled remix of Future’s “Karate Chop,” in which, as Dr. Boyce Watkins noted today, “compares Emmett Till’s face to a woman’s v@gina after he’s had s*x with her.”

According to TMZ, a representative from the Till family also took issue with the fact that Wayne never actually says “I’m sorry.” Airickca Gordon-Taylor of the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation reportedly said, “While it’s commendable that he has vowed to respect the legacy of Emmett Till and his memory to ‘not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in his music,’ this statement falls short of an apology, as none is mentioned.”

As Pitchfork points out, Gordon-Taylor and her relatives released a video last month urging Mountain Dew to drop Lil Wayne as a product spokesman. Protestors were recently successful in pressuring Reebok to call off its endorsement of Rick Ross following a lyric that blatantly celebrated date rape. Also, Boyce Watkins made the news today for spearheading a complaint that led to Mountain Dew ditching its latest Tyler, the Creator-directed ad.
