Hear Light Heat’s Shimmering Slow-Burner ‘The Mirror’

Light Heat

Under the banner of Mazarin, Philadelphia-based songwriter Quentin Stoltzfus spent the better part of the early aughts conjuring a haze of psych-inflected folk-pop. But after a period of reticence that lasted almost as long as the project did, Stolzfus has returned as Light Heat, backed by Paul Maroon, Matt Barrick, Peter Bauer, Walter Martin of the Walkmen. “The Mirror, ” from Light Heat’s forthcoming self-titled debut, finds Stolzfus trading in Mazarin’s Shins-y sheen for swelling organs and a slow swirl of haunting guitar work, which, together, recall Laetitia Sadier’s post-Stereolab output. Though it’s a bit unclear what Stolzfus has been up to in the intervening years, it’s really good to have him back either way. Light Heat is set to arrive June 25 courtesy of Ribbon Music.
