Throughout this week, Jimmy Fallon has remembered the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley’s passing by having Chris Cornell, Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz, and other top artists perform the reggae legend’s songs live on Late Night. Lauryn Hill dropped by the show Thursday night to pay her respects — and her performance was easily the week’s highlight. Wearing an eye-popping psychedelic dress, Hill delivered faithful renditions of Marley’s tunes with her own crack band, instead of Fallon’s house group the Roots. Her rendition of “Could You Be Loved” is particularly striking as she turns up the energy and delivers a swaggering, funked-up party-starter. “That was phenomenal,” Fallon says at the end. Indeed.
The tribute from Hill was particularly poignant: though it’s not often publicized, the 35-year-old songstress is the mother of five children with Rohan Marley, the fourth son of the reggae legend.
