The Ladybug Transistor ‘Always on the Telephone’

Even after the recent, tragic passing of longtime drummer San Fadyl, the Ladybug Transistor keep it together on Can’t Wait Another Day, the Brooklyn-based outfit’s sixth long-player out on Merge this week. The dozen-song set is a sophisticated pop affair, yet it’s the autumnal tones of “Always on the Telephone,” that capture the Ladybug’s more somber moods. Vocalist/guitarist Gary Olsen’s dark, melancholic voice leads us through a journey of two lovers who just can’t seem to connect. Twangy guitar riffs, high lonesome organs, and a smooth saxophone solo (Gerry Rafferty’s “Baker Street,” anyone?) bring us back to the chorus, in which a contemplative Olsen proclaims, “Always on my own, it’s got to end soon.” The Ladybug Transistor, always the heartbreakers.

Catch the Ladybug Transistor at the San Fadyl Memorial Concert at Brooklyn’s Soundfix venue June 5th. The band as well as Amy Linden (Aislers Set), Sasha Bell (Essex Green), Joe McGinty (Baby Steps), among others, will perform songs from Can’t Wait Another Day. With a suggested $12 donation, all proceeds from the show will to go Fadyl’s wife, Bridgit, and their son, Liam.
