Hear Kurt Vile’s Full, Pointedly Rambling ‘Wakin on a Pretty Daze’

Kurt Vile

It’s an occasion worthy of a parade. Kurt Vile first told us about the album that would turn out to be Wakin on a Pretty Daze back in December, when he said the upcoming full-length would be more “classic rock-y” than his past work. He also compared it to Fleetwood Mac’s obsessively detailed Tusk, “but no cheese. Just rock.” Since then, he has shared the expansive near-title-track “Wakin on a Pretty Day” and the single “Never Run Away,” plus strummed both in a pared-down setting. Now his third album for Matador, due out on April 9, is streaming in full via NPR. “There was a time in my life when they thought I was all talk,” Philadelphia’s self-proclaimed constant hitmaker deadpans over gleaming acoustic guitar on echoing space-out “Was All Talk.” That time is past.
