Kurt Cobain, John Lennon, and Tupac Sell Beer in Awful Commercial

What if Kurt Cobain didn’t die? It’s a question Chuck Klosterman tried to answer for SPIN back in 2004, as the 10th anniversary of Cobain’s tragic suicide approached. Now, with the 20th anniversary of the Nirvana frontman’s death looming, Dutch beer company Bavaria Radler has offered their own answer to one of alt-rock’s biggest “What if?” scenarios. According to a new, remarkably tasteless commercial from the brewer (via Consequence of Sound), Cobain is reclining on a secret, mostly deserted island, knocking back Bavaria Radlers alongside Elvis Presley, Tupac Shakur, Marilyn Monroe, and Bruce Lee.

We expected the 20th anniversary of Cobain’s death and Nirvana’s upcoming, sorta-controversial induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would spark some renewed interest in the iconic band and its fallen leader (the Seattle Police Department recently re-opened and closed the case of Cobain’s death, new photos from the scene surfaced, and Cobain’s childhood home could become a museum), but c’mon. This is more shameful than that crying statue in Aberdeen, Washington.
